{"id":266,"date":"2014-04-27T05:00:06","date_gmt":"2014-04-27T05:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sjcmetheology.wpengine.com\/?p=266"},"modified":"2014-04-27T05:00:06","modified_gmt":"2014-04-27T05:00:06","slug":"jesus-i-trust-in-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sjcme.edu\/theology\/jesus-i-trust-in-you\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Jesus, I Trust in You.&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sjcme.edu\/theology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2014\/04\/Divine-Mercy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-272 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sjcme.edu\/theology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2014\/04\/Divine-Mercy-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"Divine Mercy\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>As the Church and world celebrate the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicapostolatecenter.org\/canonization-resources.html\" target=\"_blank\">canonizations of St. John XXIII and St. John Paul II<\/a> today, it is important to note the significance of this day on which these canonizations are taking place, <span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong>Divine Mercy Sunday<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 For St. John Paul II, the Mercy of God was an early and prevalent theme in his pontificate.\u00a0 In 1980, he issued the encyclical, <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/john_paul_ii\/encyclicals\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_enc_30111980_dives-in-misericordia_en.html\" target=\"_blank\">Dives in Misericordia<\/a><\/i>, which not only views Jesus Christ as the \u201cIncarnation of mercy\u201d (2), but also teaches that mercy is \u201cthe fundamental content of the messianic message of Christ and the constitutive power of His mission\u201d (6).\u00a0 The ramification of such a bold way of describing mercy challenges human beings to move beyond a basic understanding of justice.\u00a0 He notes that \u201cmercy has the power to confer on justice a new content, which is expressed most simply and fully in forgiveness\u201d (14).<\/p>\n<p>Forgiveness in an age of self-centeredness and rabid individualism is often seen as\u00a0weakness.\u00a0 And yet, through the seeming weakness of the Cross, his \u201csorrowful passion&#8221;, forgiveness, love, and mercy are offered \u201cto us and to the whole world\u201d (Cf. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/beliefs-and-teachings\/how-we-teach\/new-evangelization\/year-of-faith\/how-to-pray-the-chaplet-of-divine-mercy.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Chaplet of Divine Mercy<\/a>).\u00a0 They are confirmed in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ who <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sjcme.edu\/theology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2014\/04\/St.-Faustina.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-273\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sjcme.edu\/theology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2014\/04\/St.-Faustina.jpg\" alt=\"St. Faustina\" width=\"168\" height=\"175\" \/><\/a>appears to his disciples and takes away all doubt, bringing peace to those in fear.\u00a0 All of the baptized are called to carry on this mission of Christ that offers mercy to a suffering and broken world.\u00a0 A life lived in mercy will lead to greater unity with one another.\u00a0 St. John Paul II, when he canonized the visionary of Divine Mercy, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/news_services\/liturgy\/saints\/ns_lit_doc_20000430_faustina_en.html\" target=\"_blank\">St. Faustina Kowolska<\/a>, and declared the Second Sunday of Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday in the Jubilee Year of 2000, said in his homily that day that Jesus \u201cshowed us the many paths of mercy, which not only forgives sins but reaches out to all human needs\u2026every kind of human poverty, material and spiritual\u201d\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/john_paul_ii\/homilies\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_hom_20000430_faustina_en.html\" target=\"_blank\">Homily for Divine Mercy Sunday<\/a>, 4).<\/p>\n<p>True and lasting forgiveness that leads to living a life of deeper compassion and mercy can only occur with trust.\u00a0 The Apostle Thomas in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/042714.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">today\u2019s Gospel passage<\/a> did not trust the word of witness of his brothers and sisters in the Upper Room.\u00a0 He needed to experience the mercy of Jesus Christ for himself, as do we.\u00a0 It is only through a personal encounter with Christ as the Merciful One that we have the graced strength to say, \u201cJesus, I trust in You!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fr.
