{"id":1450,"date":"2017-01-22T05:00:18","date_gmt":"2017-01-22T10:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sjcmetheology.wpengine.com\/?p=1450"},"modified":"2017-01-22T05:00:18","modified_gmt":"2017-01-22T10:00:18","slug":"every-kind-of-thing-shall-be-well","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sjcme.edu\/theology\/every-kind-of-thing-shall-be-well\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cEVERY KIND OF THING SHALL BE WELL\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">\u2013 the Revelations of Julian of Norwich<\/p>\n<p id=\"E15\"><span id=\"E16\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">For our third installment on contemplat<\/span><span id=\"E17\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">ion<\/span><span id=\"E18\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, having <\/span><span id=\"E19\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">looked at<\/span><span id=\"E20\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> Jesus as <\/span><span id=\"E21\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">our model of contemplation and <\/span><span id=\"E22\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">experiencing <\/span><span id=\"E23\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">the twentieth-century gift of <\/span><span id=\"E24\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Thomas Merton<\/span><span id=\"E25\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> and the necessary blending of action and contemplation<\/span><span id=\"E26\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, we go backward to medieval times and the mystics.<\/span><span id=\"E27\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E28\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Though her writing is of the fourteenth<\/span><span id=\"E29\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">&#8211;<\/span><span id=\"E30\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">century, <\/span><span id=\"E31\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Julian of Norwich (1342-<\/span><span id=\"E32\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">c.<\/span><span id=\"E33\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">1416) resonates <\/span><span id=\"E34\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">deeply within our aching modern world<\/span><span id=\"E35\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E36\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">as <\/span><span id=\"E37\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">she<\/span><span id=\"E38\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E39\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">has much to <\/span><span id=\"E40\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">teach us about<\/span><span id=\"E41\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> contemplation,<\/span><span id=\"E42\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E43\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">our<\/span><span id=\"E44\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> relationship with <\/span><span id=\"E45\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">the <\/span><span id=\"E46\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">blessed <\/span><span id=\"E47\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Trinity<\/span><span id=\"E48\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">,<\/span><span id=\"E49\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E50\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">and love.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"E55\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Julian is one of the four English Mystics<\/span><span id=\"E56\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> of the Middle Ages<\/span><span id=\"E57\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> \u2013 the others being Richard Rolle, Walter Hilton, and the anonymous author of <\/span><span id=\"E58\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">The Cloud of Unknowing<\/span><span id=\"E59\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">. Despite her popularity today, we <\/span><span id=\"E60\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">know<\/span><span id=\"E61\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> very little about her. We do not even know her name as she is known by the name of the church<\/span><span id=\"E62\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">,<\/span><span id=\"E63\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E64\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">St. Julian\u2019s Church in Norwich, England<\/span><span id=\"E65\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, <\/span><span class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">to which her cell was attached.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1451\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a id=\"E69\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">n <\/span><span id=\"E70\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">anchoress, a <\/span><span id=\"E71\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">female anchorite. <\/span><span id=\"E72\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Choosing an extreme form of religious life, an <\/span><span id=\"E73\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">anchoress\/<\/span><span id=\"E74\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">anchorit<\/span><span id=\"E75\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">e <\/span><span id=\"E76\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">(from Greek, <\/span><span id=\"E77\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">anchorein<\/span><span id=\"E78\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, to withdraw) <\/span><span id=\"E79\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">left <\/span><span id=\"E80\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">the <\/span><span id=\"E81\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">secular <\/span><span id=\"E82\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">world to live <\/span><span id=\"E83\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">an interior life of<\/span><span id=\"E84\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> prayer. <\/span><span id=\"E85\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Irreversibly w<\/span><span id=\"E86\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">alled up in a cell<\/span><span id=\"E87\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> in which the last rites were administered before the door was sealed<\/span><span id=\"E88\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> (<\/span><span id=\"E89\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">talk about being<\/span><span id=\"E90\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> \u201cdead to the world<\/span><span id=\"E91\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">!<\/span><span id=\"E92\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u201d)<\/span><span id=\"E93\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, <\/span><span id=\"E94\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">an anchor<\/span><span id=\"E95\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">ess\/<\/span><span id=\"E96\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">anchorite<\/span><span id=\"E97\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> would participate in church services through one window which looked onto t<\/span><span id=\"E98\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">he church <\/span><span id=\"E99\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">and <\/span><span id=\"E100\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">often <\/span><span id=\"E101\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">provide spiritual guidance through another window which would look onto the street. <\/span><span id=\"E102\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Many of us at times may want to withdraw from <\/span><span id=\"E103\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">our lives or even <\/span><span id=\"E104\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">the world, but I doubt <\/span><span id=\"E105\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">we<\/span><span id=\"E106\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> could handle the life of an anchoress\/<\/span><span id=\"E107\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E108\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">anchorite for very long. <\/span><span id=\"E109\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Julian lived in her cell for over 20 years<\/span><span id=\"E110\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, contemplating the meaning of her visions<\/span><span id=\"E111\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">. How could this <\/span><span id=\"E112\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">fourteenth-century<\/span><span id=\"E113\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E114\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">recluse<\/span><span id=\"E115\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E116\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">have any <\/span><span id=\"E117\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">possible <\/span><span id=\"E118\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">meaning for us <\/span><span id=\"E119\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">today<\/span><span id=\"E120\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">?<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E122\"><span id=\"E125\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Julian of Norwich\u2019s mystical writings <\/span><em><span id=\"E126\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Revelations of Divine Love <\/span><\/em><span id=\"E127\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">is found in two versions the \u201cShort Text\u201d written shortly after her mystical experiences and the \u201cLong Text\u201d which was <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sjcme.edu\/theology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/01\/Julian_of_Norwich-from-Norwich-Cathedral.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1452\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sjcme.edu\/theology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/01\/Julian_of_Norwich-from-Norwich-Cathedral-193x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"193\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sjcme.edu\/theology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/01\/Julian_of_Norwich-from-Norwich-Cathedral-193x300.jpg 193w, https:\/\/blogs.sjcme.edu\/theology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/01\/Julian_of_Norwich-from-Norwich-Cathedral.jpg 386w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 193px) 100vw, 193px\" \/><\/a>written after a couple of decades of reflection on those experiences.<\/span><span id=\"E128\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> She tells us her revelations occurred on <\/span><span id=\"E129\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">8<\/span><span id=\"E130\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> May 1373 <\/span><span id=\"E131\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">(13 May as expressed in her writing which were based on the old Julian calendar) <\/span><span id=\"E132\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">when she was 3<\/span><span id=\"E133\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">0<\/span><span id=\"E134\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> years old and a lay woman. Julian was born <\/span><span id=\"E135\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">into and wrote during<\/span><span id=\"E136\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> a time of grea<\/span><span id=\"E137\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">t political and social unrest\u2013 the black <\/span><span id=\"E138\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">plague was rampant, the Hundred Years War was in fu<\/span><span id=\"E139\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">ll swing, a<\/span><span id=\"E140\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">nd the Church was <\/span><span id=\"E141\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">in disarray<\/span><span id=\"E142\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> with the Great <\/span><span id=\"E143\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Western <\/span><span id=\"E144\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Schism<\/span><span id=\"E145\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E146\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">(<\/span><span id=\"E147\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Can<\/span><span id=\"E148\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> you find any pa<\/span><span id=\"E149\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">rallels <\/span><span id=\"E150\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">to <\/span><span id=\"E151\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">today\u2019s world?<\/span><span id=\"E152\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">)<\/span><span id=\"E153\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E154\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Julian\u2019s mystical experiences have been described as near death experiences as she was so close to death <\/span><span id=\"E155\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">a<\/span><span id=\"E156\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> priest had given her the last rites. <\/span><span id=\"E157\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">She had a vision <\/span><span id=\"E158\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">of Jesus<\/span><span id=\"E159\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> dying on the cross, and in <\/span><span id=\"E160\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">that <\/span><span id=\"E161\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">one night had sixteen visions<\/span><span id=\"E162\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> or showings<\/span><span id=\"E163\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> in which Christ <\/span><span id=\"E164\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">spoke to her<\/span><span id=\"E165\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E168\"><span id=\"E169\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Julian understood that the way to union with God was through the suffering humanity <\/span><span id=\"E171\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">of Christ<\/span><span id=\"E172\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> (Lane 26). However, i<\/span><span id=\"E173\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">nstead of trying to understand the mystery of suffering<\/span><span id=\"E174\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> (which will be revealed in the next life)<\/span><span id=\"E175\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, Julian chose to concentrate her energy on what has been revealed<\/span><span id=\"E176\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> \u2013 choosing to concentrate on<\/span><span id=\"E177\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> the revelation not the mystery. Christ told Julian, \u201cI know how to make all things well, and I wish to make all things well. I shall make all things well. You will see for yourself: every kind of thing shall be well\u201d (LT 31<\/span><span id=\"E178\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, Julian<\/span><span id=\"E179\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> 74<\/span><span id=\"E180\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">). Julian explains our faulty reasoning with understanding these <\/span><span id=\"E181\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">words<\/span><span id=\"E182\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> (<\/span><span id=\"E183\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">note: <\/span><span id=\"E184\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">I am using Mirabai Starr\u2019s <\/span><span id=\"E185\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">contemporary translation <\/span><span id=\"E186\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">of<\/span><span id=\"E187\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> Julian\u2019s Middle English).<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E189\" style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span id=\"E190\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">From our point of view, there are many actions in this world that seem to be done with evil intent, and we see that they cause great harm. It seems impossible to us that such things could ever have a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">good outcome. When we think about this<\/span><span id=\"E191\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, our hearts are filled with such sorrow and grief that we cannot rest joyfully beholding our God, which we would like to do. The problem lies with our faulty reason. We are too blind to comprehend the <\/span><span id=\"E192\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">wondrous<\/span><span id=\"E193\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> wisdom of God, too limited to grasp the power and goodness of the blessed Trinity. That\u2019s why he says, \u201cYou will see for yourself: every kind of thing shall be well\u201d \u2026 the loving goodness of our Lord God wishes for us to be aware that it will be done, yet his power and wisdom, which stem from the same love, choose to hide from us exactly what it will be and how it will be done\u2026he wishes our souls to rest in ease and our hearts to abide in peaceful love\u2026And so how could it be that every kind of thing shall be well? \u2026 it seems impossible! The only answer I could find in any of my showings was when our beloved said, \u201cWhat is impossible for you is not impossible for me. I shall keep my word in all things, and I shall make all things well\u201d <\/span><span id=\"E194\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u2026This is the great blessing our Beloved will bestow, and by which he will keep his word and make everything well that is not well. Still, what that deed is and how he will do it remain a mystery to any mind inferior to the mind of Christ. <\/span><\/em><span id=\"E195\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">(<\/span><span id=\"E196\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">LT<\/span><span id=\"E197\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> 32<\/span><span id=\"E198\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, Julian 77-79)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p id=\"E200\"><span id=\"E201\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u201cMore than anything else in her life, Julian needed the reassurance that well-being in an ultimate sense was possible, no matter how many terrible things happened in the world\u201d (Rolf 384). <\/span><span id=\"E202\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Many of us need that reassurance as well. <\/span><span id=\"E203\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">We <\/span><span id=\"E204\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">should not <\/span><span id=\"E205\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">be anxious<\/span><span id=\"E206\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E207\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">about<\/span><span id=\"E208\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E209\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">things of this world, though we <\/span><span id=\"E210\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">need to take action when<\/span><span id=\"E211\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> necessary<\/span><span id=\"E212\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">. W<\/span><span id=\"E213\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">e need to trust God\u2019s wisdom<\/span><span id=\"E214\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> and \u201ctrust that we will know whatever we need to know in this life\u201d (LT 1<\/span><span id=\"E215\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, Julian 4)<\/span><span id=\"E216\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E218\"><span id=\"E219\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Julian also emphasized<\/span><span id=\"E220\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> our oneness with God, our union with the Trinity (and as such, with each other), her description of \u201cour soul dwelling in God\u201d provides a fresh perspective <\/span><span id=\"E221\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">and helps put the \u201c<\/span><span id=\"E222\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">a<\/span><span id=\"E223\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">ll shall be well\u201d in a <\/span><span id=\"E224\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">new<\/span><span id=\"E225\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E226\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">context<\/span><span id=\"E227\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E229\" style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span id=\"E230\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">We would be right to rejoice that God dwells within our own souls, and even more so that our souls dwell in God. Our soul was created to be God\u2019s dwelling place, and he who is uncreated is also the place where we dwell. It is a sublime realization to see with inner eyes that God, our Creator, dwells inside us, and it is an even more exalted thing to understand inwardly that the essence of our soul, which is created, dwells in God. It is by this essence that, through God, we are what we are. I saw no difference between the divine substance and the human substance; it was all God. I was able to accept that our essence is in God, that our essence is a creation of God, and God is simply God. <\/span><\/em><span id=\"E230\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">(LT 54, Julian 149).<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E232\"><span id=\"E233\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">How can all <\/span><em><span id=\"E234\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">not be well<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E235\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> if we dwell in God? <\/span><span id=\"E236\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Julian knew that only in the contemplation of God can our soul find rest, thus we must seek our soul in God. <\/span><span id=\"E237\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Everything is nothing without the love of God. As with St. Augustine, Julian knew the happy life cannot be obtained except in God. <\/span><span id=\"E238\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">The f<\/span><span id=\"E239\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">ullness of joy is to contemplate God in everything \u2013 every form of creation, every form of life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E241\"><span id=\"E242\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Julian <\/span><span id=\"E244\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">reflects on<\/span><span id=\"E245\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> the <\/span><span id=\"E246\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">m<\/span><span id=\"E247\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">otherhood of God<\/span><span id=\"E248\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, in connection with her fourteenth revelation, <\/span><span id=\"E249\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">as she pondered, \u201cDo I know what such love is?\u201d (Rolf 512). <\/span><span id=\"E250\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">She <\/span><span id=\"E251\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">equates<\/span><span id=\"E252\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> the<\/span><span id=\"E253\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E254\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">m<\/span><span id=\"E255\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">otherhood of God with Christ, the Second Person of the Trinity, w<\/span><span id=\"E256\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">ho gives birth to the entire creation (Col 1:16), w<\/span><span id=\"E257\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">ho is wisdom<\/span><span id=\"E258\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">,<\/span><span id=\"E259\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> and who loves us and longs for us.<\/span><span id=\"E260\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><span id=\"E261\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u201cAs truly as God is our Father, just as truly God is our Mother,\u201d states Julian, for in the \u201cIt is I<\/span><span id=\"E262\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">,<\/span><span id=\"E263\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u201d God means<\/span><span id=\"E264\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E266\" style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span id=\"E267\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> <\/span><em><span id=\"E268\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">I am the Power and the Goodness of the Fatherhood. I am the Wisdom and the Loving-kindness of the Motherhood. I am the Light and Grace of all blessed love. I am the Threefold nature of the Divine. I am Unity. I am the supreme goodness in every kind of thing. I am the one who causes you to love. I am the one who causes you to yearn. It is I, the endless fulfillment of all desire<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E269\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> (LT<\/span><span id=\"E272\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> 59, Julian 163).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p id=\"E274\"><span id=\"E275\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Julian <\/span><span id=\"E276\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">goes on to state<\/span><span id=\"E277\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, \u201cI <\/span><span id=\"E278\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">saw that there is<\/span><span id=\"E279\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> no greater statue in this life than <\/span><span id=\"E280\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">that of a child, who is naturally humble and free from the encumbrances of power and intelligence, until our Divine Mother brings us up to the bliss of our Divine Father (LT 63, Julian 174-175<\/span><span id=\"E281\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">). <\/span><span id=\"E282\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">This is what Christ meant when he said, \u201cAll will be well. You will see for yourself: every kind of thing shall be well\u201d (Julian 175).<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E284\"><span id=\"E285\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Julian <\/span><span id=\"E286\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">provides<\/span><span id=\"E287\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> us the three medicines needed to heal every soul: contrition, compassion, true yearning for God. These gifts from God help us along our spiritual journey: \u201cBy contrition we are washed clean. By compassion we are made ready. By true longing for God we are rendered worthy\u201d (LT 39, Julian 95). This is the true blending of contemplation and action. Our contrition and humility, our compassion towards all of creation (our love), and our longing for God (<\/span><span id=\"E288\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">and<\/span><span id=\"E289\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> finding God in every form of life) are all important.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E290\"><span id=\"E291\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Ultimately, the<\/span><span id=\"E292\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"> meaning of Julian\u2019s revelations is <\/span><span id=\"E293\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">love<\/span><span id=\"E294\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">: <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E295\" style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span id=\"E296\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"><em>Throughout the time of my showings, I wished to know what our Beloved meant. More than fifteen years later, the answer came in a spiritual vision. This is what I heard. \u201cWould you like to know our Lord\u2019s meaning in all this? Know it well: love was his meaning. Who revealed it to you? Love. What did he reveal to you? Love. Why did he reveal it to you? For love. Stay with this and you will know more of the same. You will never know anything but love, without end\u201d And so what I saw most clearly was that love is his meaning. God wants us to know that he loved us before he even made us, and this love has never diminished and never will. All his actions unfold from this love, and through this love he makes everything that happens of value to us, and in this love we find everlasting life.
