{"id":489,"date":"2018-08-16T15:45:41","date_gmt":"2018-08-16T15:45:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.sjcme.edu\/ess\/?p=489"},"modified":"2018-08-16T15:45:41","modified_gmt":"2018-08-16T15:45:41","slug":"power-of-immersion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sjcme.edu\/ess\/power-of-immersion\/","title":{"rendered":"The Power of Immersion: Why the Environmental Science Semester Works"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People have heard of experiential education. \u00a0This is the educational practice in which learning is enhanced and made meaningful by engaging with and working with the subject matter, as opposed to just reading or hearing about a topic. \u00a0The Environmental Science Semester takes experiential education to a new level and requires a different name. We\u2019re calling it immersion education\u2013students are immersed off campus and in the field <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the study of environmental and marine science topics for ten weeks. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students will live and breathe glacial geology, climate science, marine ecology, and oceanography day in and day out. \u00a0It will seep into their pores. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The immersion educational experience has led previous ESS participants to report that they not only remember and understand so much more of what they\u2019ve learned on the ESS compared to normal classes, but they can also remember when and where they learned most of it. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I return in October, I won\u2019t return with the same students I left with. \u00a0They won\u2019t be the same people \u2013 they will be transformed into confident students and practicing scientists who have shared an experience that bonds them to each other and to our team of faculty for a lifetime. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re off on another ESS! \u00a0And I couldn\u2019t be happier!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Johan Erikson<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>People have heard of experiential education. \u00a0This is the educational practice in which learning is enhanced and made meaningful by engaging with and working with the subject matter, as opposed to just reading or hearing about a topic. \u00a0The Environmental Science Semester takes experiential education to a new level and requires a different name.
