{"id":289,"date":"2014-10-15T20:16:33","date_gmt":"2014-10-15T20:16:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sjcmeess.wpengine.com\/?p=289"},"modified":"2014-10-15T20:16:33","modified_gmt":"2014-10-15T20:16:33","slug":"sailing-in-october","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sjcme.edu\/ess\/sailing-in-october\/","title":{"rendered":"Sailing in October"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are advantages and disadvantages to using a sailboat as a research vessel and floating classroom.\u00a0 If there&#8217;s any wind, then sailboats tend to be more stable than motorboats with less rolling and yawing, and that makes for less nausea.\u00a0 Sailboats provide a lot more to do when moving between sampling sites, what with all of the tacking, jibing, and sail adjustments.\u00a0 From the academic perspective, sailboats certainly increase awareness of wind direction and intensity, which everyone\u00a0quickly connects to wave conditions.<\/p>\n<p>On the downside, sailboats usually take much longer to get from point A to point B, especially when point B is to windward of point A.\u00a0 And with uncanny frequency, even if you decided to go from B to A, rather than A to B, the wind would shift to make sure you have to sail upwind!\u00a0 In addition, sailboats heel when sailing toward the wind, commonly from 10 to 25 degrees, and that&#8217;s a challenge for most people new to the sea.<\/p>\n<p>Our particular boat is the 52&#8242; schooner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.portlandschooner.com\/portland_only_historic_windjammers_bagheera.shtml\"><em>Bagheera<\/em><\/a>, built in 1924 here in Maine and operated by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.portlandschooner.com\/\">Portland Schooner Company<\/a>.\u00a0 That&#8217;s the clincher.\u00a0 It&#8217;s hard to get more exciting than an gaff-rigged, locally built, 90-year-old schooner that&#8217;s sailed to Europe and back, raced (and won) in the Great Lakes, and spent years working on the West Coast.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sjcme.edu\/ess\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/10\/IMG_7689.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-298 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sjcme.edu\/ess\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/10\/IMG_7689-682x1024.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7689\" width=\"604\" height=\"906\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Good weather\u00a0and downwind sailing\u00a0make everyone happy; even academic work seems to come naturally.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sjcme.edu\/ess\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/10\/ESS-schooner-classroom.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-293 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sjcme.edu\/ess\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/10\/ESS-schooner-classroom-1024x765.jpg\" alt=\"ESS schooner classroom\" width=\"604\" height=\"451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sjcme.edu\/ess\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/10\/ESS-schooner-classroom-1024x765.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.sjcme.edu\/ess\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/10\/ESS-schooner-classroom-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sjcme.edu\/ess\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/10\/ESS-schooner-classroom-768x574.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Big swells with wind is exciting\u00a0and hard on productivity,\u00a0but there&#8217;s\u00a0lots to observe in terms of wave dynamics (plus nice scenery).\u00a0 However, big swells without wind is the worst combination because we don&#8217;t make good progress and queaziness sets in (except for the skipper, of course!).\u00a0 We hope for blue skies and fair seas!<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s going to be a great two weeks!<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;
